Mid State Conference volleyball teams go five sets during season opener

Thursday night marked the start of the high school volleyball season across the state as two northeast Nebraska teams, and members of the Mid State Conference, went to battle.

From the Wayne High gymnasium, the Blue Devils welcomed Ponca.

Wayne jumped out front early but suffered a five-set loss to start their season at 0-1. The Indians are now 1-0.

Ponca won the five set thriller 24-26, 21-25, 25-18, 25-18, 15-11.

Junior Haley Kramer secured 17 kills and eight digs for Wayne followed by fellow junior Elle Powicki with 11 kills, two digs and two blocks. Sophomore Addison Frank led the dig department with 12.

Sophomore Mallory Redden recorded 46 assists, six digs and two kills with two blocks.

Sophomore Alexis Legler (six blocks) and senior Amelia Legler (seven blocks/one solo) both recorded eight kills; junior Megan Magnuson had two kills and one dig as freshman Kamden Dobbins tallied a kill and a dig. Also, sophomore Jacen Hasemann added six digs and one assist.

Kramer led the ace department with four, followed by Hasemann and Amelia Legler with two each as Redden and Dobbins both had an ace.
